Apa on his way #18

//posted by Jerry Mika under Uncategorized | May 20th, 2008

In this day and age of super athletes whose bodies have become machines carefully calibrated to accomplish their respective feats, it’s difficult to imagine a record that can’t be broken. There was a time, fifty five years ago, when one record seemed truly out of reach . . . Summiting Mt. Everest. From that famous day of Tenzing Norgay and Sir. Edmund Hillary in 1953 to the present. Apa Sherpa will be attempting his 18th Summit of Mt Everest to bring an awareness of the global warming impact it is having in his county of Nepal. Apa is currently at camp two May 20th with the Eco Everest team and will make his attempt for the summit on May 22ND  .

I just spoke to Apa by Sat phone at camp two and he is doing well and feels strong he asked me how everything was going here at home with his family and I let him know that everyone is doing very well wishing him the best and that it was very hot today 90 degrees and he started laughing and I realized that he was in –20 to -50 degrees weather at that moment. Apa said it was cold and I told him when he returns back to Salt Lake city that we all would be waiting and he would warm up fast.

I am very honored to be able to know Apa Sherpa as a person and he is a very special friend who is so humble, kind and he is not a self glorified man. Apa has taught me that helping educate the children and the less fortunate is truly the way to achieve the ultimate Karma.

I will be posting another update as I get word from Apa.
