Snows at camp 3

//posted by admin under Everest | May 20th, 2010

Today Apa is resting at Camp 2 while the rest of the team went up to Camp 3. Tomorrow Apa will catch up to them at Camp 4, where they will all rest for a few hours before heading for the summit. Apa is doing very well in Camp 2, however, the rest of the team found an unwelcome site at Camp 3. Snows last night had completely covered two tents and they were unable to find them.

Fortunately, there were still two tents standing and they’ve all piled into them. They report that it’s actually quite cozy and that they’re doing very well. In the meantime, Nanga and Tenzing ran some tents up from Camp 2 to Camp 3 to make sure they had enough room.

I just heard from Nanga and he’s back and Camp 2 and said everyone is doing fine despite the snow.

    Apa, What do you do if the weather gets bad and you have to stay in one place (camp) for a while? How long can you wait for the weather to get better before you continue up and what makes you decide to turn around?

    Apa, you and your family gave lila and i prayer flags last year after your return form Everest. i set out some for you when you started your adventure. we have been saving a set of them. today Lila and i unfurled them in prayers for you and the team. we are very honored as friends to watch them and think of you and the team.

    Kade,

    Apa is up the mountain right now, but in answer to your question, it’s too late to turn back. The team is on oxygen now and if they stay too long at one camp, they won’t have enough to make it. Apa has climbed Everest a few times without oxygen, but he doesn’t recommend it. So, from this point on, they have to stick to the schedule or go down.

    Just wanted to say were all rooting for you here in Salt Lake City Apa. You are truly an inspiration, not only to the Nepalese people, but to Utahns as well.

    Hoping the final push is without incident, and your return home safely…

    God Bless
